Q-lab Salt spray testing
CorrosionX products are way better known to the aviation industry, defence forces, electrical companies and the ports than to bike riders. Wanting to add SpeedX to our range of products offered to the NZ and Australian market we started to search for available data of the competition as to toxicity, lubrication factor, corrosion protection, dielectric strenght (stopping electrolysis) and so on. We went from those bike shops housed inside the large discounters to the top end race suppliers in Auckland and Rotorua. Only to find……very little data. What we did find was statements from i.e.
Muc Off Wet lube quote: Muc–Off Wet Chain Lube is an ultra durable, long distance bicycle chain lubricant.
On the website for Finish Line Wet Lubricant we read : Wet Lube is ideal for muddy off-road conditions, long rainy commutes, and foggy salt-air coastal climates
and on the INOX MX9 Chukka Chain Lube one finds the straight forward message that it, I quote, “Sticks like shit”.
But we were after a bit more than the above claims. We wanted proof. Proof measured to industrial standards. And for corroion protection the world wide standards come either in DIN or ASTM definitions. The ASTM B-117 is probably the most common corrosion test used in NZ and Australia, accepted by any industry engineer looking to compare corrosion preventative coatings and oils. And there is hardly a more reputable test lab to be found down-under than the one of DULUX in Auckland to do such a test in full compliance.
The Dulux lab agreed to test these products in their salt spray chamber. We let the reader judge the results for themselves. But to help you understand the original report, downloadable from this BLOG, I dare state that ALL other products FAILED after 48 hrs of exposure. ReelX and SpeedX failed after 96 hrs of exposure. CorrosionX XD (Xtended Duty), suitable for industrial chain application exceeded 120 hrs.
Add to the fact that SpeedX has a lubrication factor of 0,31 , some 4 times better than standard engine oil, and you may appreciate why we are proud to now present the NZ and Australian market with an outstanding product. The downside of the product ? SpeedX hasn’t got the name recognition. Leaving the rider with the difficult choice of choosing a fancy bottle “with a name” or to use the product which delivers the better performance.
